Gaul
Gaul, an ancient region of Europe, corresponding to modern day France, Belgium, the South Netherlands, South West Germany and Northern Italy. The area South of the Alps was conquered by the Romans in 222BCE, who renamed it 'The Cisalpine Land of the Gauls'. The area North of the Alps, was known as 'The Transalpine Land of the Gauls', taken by Julius Caesar between 58 - 51BCE. Reference used : The OED.
