The Olmec, in culture, history and archaeology.
The Olmecs were the earliest civilisation in Meso-America following a progressive development in their settlement of Soconusco, they lived in the tropical lowlands of South-Central Mexico, in the present day states of Veracruz & Tabasco.
It has been speculated that the Olmecs derive in part from the neighbouring Mokaya & Mixe-Zoque. The Olmecs flourished during the Meso-America’s formative period, dating roughly from as early as 1,500BCE. Pre-Olmec cultures had flourished in the same areas, since about 2,500BCE.
The early Olmec culture emerged, and was centred on the San Lorenzo Tenochtitlan sites near the coastline in South-East Veracruz. They were the first Meso-American civilisation, and laid many of the foundations for the Meso-civilisations that followed.
