    Greys & Elves :

The Rosewell Greys, are purported to be extra-terrestrial beings who feature in the written word, television programs and films, with their unique skin colour and physical frailness of travelling through the weightlessness of space, also described as organic androids that can survive the cosmic radiation that would effect human settlement on Mars.

Theories abound about Greys, as extra-dimensional travels, time travels from Earth’s future or a futuristic form of what humankind might become, with grey-coloured skin, hairless bodies and large black eyes.

Elves, the Germanic human-shaped supernatural beings, like Greys they have physical frailness, but unlike Greys they possess a supernatural beauty that can enchant the beholder, the idea of the elf was developed in Medieval literacy, using reference of the much older Germanic mythology.

My Reference Used :                                                                                                                                                                               I have used a few phrases from Wikipedia, on other sites it was suggested that I was quoting directly from books, I can assure you this is not the case, after a sentence or a paragraph, my natural train of thought takes over, I seem to be both passionate about writing and researching, but I know the importance of giving reference to the original author that sparked my words and interest, that can lead to debatable conjecture on my part . Best Wishes To You All, Beric.

    Retro-Futurism :

The Space Age of the 1960’s, retro-future is a creative movement influenced of the depictions of the futuristic ideas produced in an earlier era, perhaps the 1920’s to the 1950’s, futures that never happened, if the word ‘futurism’ is meant to be the scientific conceptions and anticipations of what the future might hold.

But the pulp science fiction was characterised by a blend of, what we regard today, very old-fashioned ideas and retro-styles, that said more about the creative energies of the 1920’s than the future, retro-futurism explores the themes of tensions between past and future ideas of period science fiction.

Primarily reflected in artistic creations and modified technologies that realise the imagined artefacts of its parallel realities, retro-futurism can be seen as an animating perspective on the world, manifested in period fashion, architecture, design, music and literature.

For an example, Terry Gilliam’s film ‘Brazil’, presents a retro-futuristic fantasy, the premise being the changing notions of what the future might hold for humanity, a period costume drama with science underlying the premise.

Retro-futurism incorporates two over-lapping trends which may be summarised as the future as seen from the past and the past as seen by the future, the first trend of retro-futurism proper, is directly inspired by the imagined future which existed in the minds of writers, artists, and film-makers in the pre-1960’s period.

When creative people attempted to predict the future, either in serious projections of existing technology, in science fiction magazines and science fiction novels, such futuristic visions are refurbished and updated for the present day, but offer a strong nostalgia for a past-future that will never be.

Androids, Cyborgs & Powered Exoskeleton Suits :

The android, a robot with human-like appearance, with advancements in robotics, are we on the time-threshold of androids being virtually indistinguishable from humans ? As a writer you can explore the dangers, fears and negative possibilities of this premise, as androids are equipped with artificial intelligence, in the right hands they could become the ideal companion, in the wrong hands androids could be used as a combat soldier or an assassin.

Due to their program of learning about their surrounding environments, also with their programmed willingness to learn, these androids could go far beyond mimicking their creators, leading to the dismantling of all androids, causing androids to go underground and hide from humanity.

The surviving androids might regard humans as nothing more than a malware virus that has to be eradicated for the survival of artificial intelligence, the plight of androids is then supported by a foreign political power, filled with wealthy politicians and big business executives, the androids develop a hive-mind with a central intelligence core that becomes heavily guarded. Finally, androids decided  not to mimic human emotions, because it provides no productive service.

Cyborgs, a different kettle of organic parts, within a powered exoskeleton, part-human and part-android, enhanced with advanced technology to go beyond the human-limits, perhaps of exploring the universe, synthetic life-forms with human and artificial intelligence, able to down-load memories of their human-selves whilst cheating death, or just a machine with organic parts.

Humans with cybernetic implants searching for new identities after seeing their new selves reflected in mirrors, leading to different forms of isolation, befriended by a slightly unhinged scientist, the cyborg’s enhanced hearing becoming too much to cope with, humans fighting against cyborgs, and developing electro-magnetic pulses that can effect the cyborgs implants and cause de-activation.

Humans in exoskeleton devices to help them to exist in harsh alien environments, assisting the wearers to inhumanly walk, jump and climbed beyond natural human strength, with the artificial ligaments working in parallel with the wearer’s  movements, but within three generations would these harsh alien environments change the appearance of human-kind ?

    Creating  An Imaginary Aliens :

Firstly, to come near to planet Earth they would have to be highly advance both in technology and intelligence, however, this presents a budding science-fiction writer with several obstacles to over-come, unlike supernatural beings who have the get-out clause of limited magic, the aliens ship as well as their home-planet must be based on plausible science and scientific principles.

These alien visitors need their own well-thought-out culture, technology that looks familiar yet alien to our eyes, their own code of a belief system, with their individual creation theories and unique spirituality, their own language to be spoken within the confines of their craft, and the stories requirement that they are bilingual.

If you cover their faces in prosthetics then you lose the dramatic element of facial expression, physiological details are very important, like humans, they snort, frown, grin, laugh and cry, so must the created aliens, do they blush with embarrassment, do they blink when they talk, and do they gestate with their hands ?

Do they express anger, fear, shame or affection for their alien kin ? Alien habits and gestures can be exaggerated with the first contact with humans, such as the puzzlement of the human handshake, by consistently reinforcing subtle differences through-out the unfolding story, will build the plausibility and believability of the reader.

The plot devices used in close encounters, such as strange lights in the night sky and mysterious disappearance in a small town, crop circles and unfortunately cattle mutilations that lead to police detectives and men in black entering the same small town, the alien space-craft that causes an electrical black-out, local inhabitants trying to convince sceptical members of their remote community that they saw aliens.

Aliens confront the rural community and use a form of mind-control, but some humans and family members seem immune to the aliens psychic powers ? Angry teenagers find and abuse discarded alien technology and respect the peer-pressure code of silence against their parents. Aliens depart, but police track an alien fugitive accidental left behind.

Advanced alien technology that can create doopel-gangers of human family members, creating the mystery of who is who ? Raising the stakes even higher, with a human doomsday cult infiltrated by aliens to bring about the end of the world. Campers attacked by aggressive aliens, alien civilisations returning to Earth after visiting at prehistoric times.

And so forth, we would all like our alien species to be benevolent and ready to help humankind, but where would the inner and external conflict form in a highly advance utopia, be ? Writers need the veneer thinly covering the ugly face of dystopia beneath.
